Learn English with the Across Cultures EAL Resources
Within a constantly evolving world, where the number of learners with EAL is consistently increasing in schools, it is now more important than ever to ensure that we have secured a high-quality EAL provision to help these learners access the curriculum and feel included in the classroom.
Across Cultures is an organisation that partners with schools aiming to share the knowledge, skills and resources needed to successfully support language learners with EAL, low-level literacy and/or SEND needs in the multilingual classroom. From providing the highest quality professional development and blended learning resources designed with these learners’ needs in mind to embracing the development of international-mindedness within multilingual classrooms, all of the services (outlined below) provide a comprehensive, flexible and supportive approach to mastering English.
Learning Village (Village & Islands)
Learning Village is a blended EAL vocabulary, language structure and reading programme designed for new to English and low-level literacy learners. It provides carefully scaffolded survival language, phonics and spelling as well as academic/curriculum language within an interactive, gamified and immersive format for learning. Learning Village uses image as the language of instruction, which makes it suitable for learners of any mother tongue and any literacy level. It offers an online independent learning environment for learners, suitable for small group teaching and ready-made resources for interventions and differentiation in class.
Community Village
Community Village offers ESOL blended learning and resources for EAL parents aiming to promote community engagement. Its content is carefully tailored to support both family learning and self-study in accessing communication in schools (e.g. meetings with teachers), language to support understanding of curriculum content, the fundamentals of English vocabulary and phonics and spelling. Learning on Community Village also happens through images, thus accommodating learners of any language background.
AssessEP
AssessEP is an English Proficiency assessment tool that allows you to understand a learner’s English proficiency level. It can be used to assess learners’ initial level of English (placement testing) but it can also provide ongoing feedback on progress. Aligned to other EAL frameworks (BELL, CEFR, NASSEA etc), AssessEP assesses strengths and weaknesses in all four language skills and helps determine EAL provision across the school.
EAL Framework Process
Across Cultures’ EAL Framework aims to provide teachers with training and resources for developing whole-school provision for supporting EAL learning and teaching. The process supports the growth of solid practice, creates consistency across a school and provides flexible resources to enable enhanced differentiation.
The Across Cultures services have transformed the learning experiences of countless students, and teachers have seen marked improvements in the learners’ language proficiency, literacy skills and overall engagement in learning.
