Maidenhead Town Hall
Theme: Good Practice for Supporting New Arrivals
Guest Speaker: Danny Diaz | EAL Co-ordinator, Hounslow Heath Infant and Nursery; and EAL Consultant, Hounslow Language Service
We met in the grand committee room at Maidenhead Town Hall which gave us a delightful setting for networking and hearing our visiting speaker.
Around twenty five teachers and Local Authority EAL personnel from the various LAs our RIG serves turned up to hear guest speaker Danny Diaz talk about good practice for New Arrivals.
Danny shared with us his school’s philosophy of a curriculum that goes beyond the walls of the classroom, and into the outdoors, where new arrivals in particular can develop their new language in the context of hands-on experiences.
He also shared ways in which his school assesses children’s language proficiency and, as part of this, made us aware of the many useful resources that his other employer, Hounslow Language Services, creates for schools.
It was great to meet new teachers from this area which is on the Eastern corner of our region.
Next RIG Meeting:
Hosted by Hampshire EMTAS, who will also introduce their ‘conversation cards’ and an exciting new ‘EAL award’ they are devising for schools.
