December 1st 2016
Institute of Education, University of Reading
The first meeting of the newly formed Berkshire-Hampshire RIG took place at The University of Reading, Institute of Education on December 1st 2016. We were delighted to welcome colleagues from five different Local Authorities, from EAL teams, from schools, from sixth form colleges, and academics from the University of Reading. Agenda items on current experiences in school and future wishes for the group sparked lively conversation between all.
Our main focus for discussion was on the DfE Proficiency Scales for English. Colleagues from Hampshire, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Reading and Portsmouth shared their approaches and perceptions of this initiative, and it was agreed that this should remain an agenda item for meetings in 2017 as we observe how schools and teachers respond to the new expectations.
Professor Ludovica Serratrice, Director of Bilingualism Matters at Reading introduced the vision for this group. She welcomed input and insights from colleagues in schools as to how Bilingualism Matters might support them and their students, and what sort of research is most useful to EAL practitioners.
We all shared thoughts about how we might want to take these meetings forward and agreed that priorities should be for the sharing of good practice; hearing from visiting speakers about their research/practice; developing understanding of key areas such as the assessment of SEN among EAL learners.
