Teachers from across the region attended the RIG meeting themed “Good EAL practice across the curriculum”.
Chris Dixon spoke on the changing distribution of EAL learners in England, and Jean Conteh spoke about Language awareness for Initial Teacher Training students.
These were followed by other presentations by practitioners on strategies including: Oksana Afitska, using L1 to aid access and understanding; Jayne Merriman, differentiating feedback in art; Ann Czebiolko, building vocabulary quickly by noting similarities in languages e.g. suffixes such as ‘tion’ and equivalent ‘zione’ in Italian; Terese Batoque, resource booklets of strategies for each subject in a secondary school. Articles from EAL Journal, Autumn 2016 were used to explore Language in Maths and teaching Reading in Science.
