What are the effects on language use in multilingual families of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated school closures? Can you help us to find out?
Colleagues at the Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism and Bilingualism Matters at the University of Reading, with collaborators at the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, UCL, Mother Tongues Ireland, and We Live Languages are conducting a research project to investigate how beliefs about multilingualism and language use may be affected in multilingual families in the UK and Ireland by school closures and social distancing measures.
The plan is to use the findings of this study to share language practices and ideas that may be useful to multilingual families for both English and their other language(s).
The researchers are looking for families in the UK or Ireland that include at least one child between the ages of 0 and 18 and who are living together during the lockdown period during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The researchers consider a family to be multilingual if one or more languages other than English are used among family members either on their own or together with English.
If you fit the bill the researchers would be very grateful if you could take part in the survey here : https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GNTVG6C
There’s even a chance to win a £40 gift voucher.
They would also be really pleased if you could share this link as widely as possible. If you are a Tweeter, you can simply retweet the following:
Are you a #multilingual family in the UK or Ireland? How is the #lockdown affecting your children’s use of English and their other language(s)?
