We’re pleased that the NALDIC BerksHants RIG is going to co-host a webinar together with Refugee Education UK to help schools meet the needs of Afghan students from asylum seeking and refugee backgrounds. A very topical subject especially for regions involved in the settlement of this population.
A colleague attended this last week and she says it was excellent! As this will be online, it is open to anyone interested to join!
Agenda
In this free online webinar aimed at teachers and school staff, we will present an introduction to supporting Afghan students that arrive in your school.
In their presentations, Hannah Elwyn from Refugee Education UK, and colleagues will draw from recent research on the displacement of young Afghans to explain the educational implications for students with a focus on barriers to their progress and achievement.
They will also outline practical strategies schools/teachers can adopt to overcome these challenges and share details of their existing and latest resources that can help schools engage with Afghan families and develop their policies and practices.
This webinar will include:
- An introduction to Refugee Education UK
- An overview of the challenges facing young Afghan students
- A presentation of suggested strategies and resources to overcome these challenges
- Q & A.
Hannah’s bio:
Hannah has worked in refugee contexts for the last 15 years, from emergency response work in a post-conflict setting to running educational and support work programmes for young refugees and asylum seekers in London.
She has also been part of research projects at REUK, looking at the educational barriers facing these young people in the UK and run training on refugee education in a range of voluntary sector and educational settings.
We will couple this with lived experiences of Afghan refugees and a discussion on the practice of the attendees in their own settings.
Even if you don’t work with Afghan refugees, strategies and resources can give you inspiration to use with another population in your setting.
