We are very excited to be inviting you to our first ever Refugee and Newcomer Special Interest group meeting on November 3rd at 3pm. This will be a meeting of two parts and you will need to register for both parts.
At our meeting, Julie Hayes (one of our co-convenors) will share an overview of how local authorities support new arrivals (for instance, working with resettlement coordinators), through to how her school and MAT are supporting new arrivals with their induction into school. Julie works for The Heath School in Merseyside.
Please join our mailing list. If you have not already joined, you can do so at https://forms.gle/FjJkfswyFwtfu9Xh9 and once joined you will be sent details of how to join this Zoom meeting.
At 3.50pm, during a five minute break, we will switch Zoom links to join an event with Refugee Action UK and Schools of Sanctuary UK, beginning at 4pm.
In this free online webinar aimed at teachers and school staff, Refugee Action will present an introduction to supporting Afghan students that arrive in your school. In their presentations, Catherine Gladwell, Chief Executive at Refugee Education UK, and colleagues will draw from recent research on the displacement of young Afghans to explain the educational implications for students with a focus on barriers to their progress and achievement. They will also outline practical strategies schools/teachers can adopt to overcome these challenges and share details of their existing and latest resources that can help schools engage with Afghan families and develop their policies and practices.
This webinar will include:
- An introduction to Schools of Sanctuary and Refugee Education UK
- An overview of the challenges facing young Afghan students
- A presentation of suggested strategies and resources to overcome these challenges
- Q & A.
Please pre- register for this second part of the meeting using the link below. Also, please feel free to share widely with your networks and you can register here:
