Within the context of this SIG, “teacher educator” refers to colleagues working directly with student teachers who are undertaking a (UK) teacher training programme in order to achieve a nationally-recognised teaching qualification. Teacher educators might work with student teachers at higher education institutions and/or directly within school settings.
UEA SY PGCE: An EAL Case Study – Supporting secondary trainee teachers and their mentors to teach EAL pupils. Supporting EAL trainee teachers and their mentors to teach all pupils.
Vicky Christoforatou and Sophie Vauzour share their EAL journey on the secondary PGCE course at the University of East Anglia. In the first part, they address the opportunities and challenges of promoting effective EAL pedagogies in the region and explore implications for the ITT and Mentoring curriculum. In the second part, they discuss strategies to support EAL trainee teachers and their school-based mentors to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers to a successful teaching career in the UK.

Vicky Christoforatou, University of East Anglia, UK
Vicky is a Lecturer in Education on the Secondary PGCE English Course. Her priorities include the promotion of effective mentoring provision for trainee teachers and the professional development of school mentors. In her own research, she explores English teachers’ approaches to the teaching of writing in secondary schools.
Sophie Vauzour, University of East Anglia, UK
Sophie is a Lecturer in Education on the Secondary PGCE Modern Languages Course and Course Director for the Secondary PGCE. Her priorities include the promotion of inclusive practices and language education in schools. In her own research, she explores anti-racist education in the Modern Language classroom in white rural England.
