Ben Van Praag, University of Bath
This talk will provide a very brief history of graffiti and how and why English has been the primary language of communication within its culture. There will be insight into a project in the favelas of Rio De Janeiro where graffiti, English language and Co-Creation was used to develop a street art tour, and how graffiti has been working as alternative form of English language education. Finally, I will explain the details of a graffiti art project that is being developed to provide a deeper understanding of the choices that young people, particularly disadvantage learners make in relation to their futures.

5. The APPEAL Tool
Audrey Capon, EAL Advisory Teacher | Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS), Wiltshire
The APPEAL Tool is the result of a collaborative project between Wiltshire EMTAS, Wiltshire Educational Psychology and Wiltshire Specialist SEN Service.
The Tool has been developed for use by SENCOs and other Practitioners working in schools to help them to answer the often asked question of: ‘Is it having English as an Additional Language that is presenting as a difficulty for this pupil, or are there also elements of SEN present?’
The feedback has been extremely positive, join the meeting to find out more.
