Theme: Yet to be confirmed
Thursday 22nd June, 16:00-17:30
Chorlton High School, Manchester
Theme: The Importance of Oracy for EAL Learners
Agenda to include:
- Information about ‘The Talking School’ (a national initiative to establish oracy in mainstream classrooms) – Susannah Haygarth, Chorlton high school;
- A quick overview / reminder of Pauline Gibbon’s ‘Language Continuum’ – looking at the essential role that well-planned speaking tasks play in effective language development – Carol Hrynyk
- Some simple strategies for explicitly teaching good group-working / collaborative skills to your learners (adapted from Neil Mercer’s ‘Thinking Together’ Project) – Carol Hrynyk
It would also be great to share any oracy strategies or resources you’ve found to be effective. Anything referencing simple/basic EAL theory or research and then linking it to useful classroom practice would be welcome.
Please let us know that you’re coming as soon as possible, for rooming and refreshments.
If you would like to be involved with the North West RIG but are unable to attend, please email Carol Hrynyk so that you receive future mailings from the group.
