The Double Bind
How can we support EAL learners in the Early Years to ease the effects of this phenomenon?
This RIG meeting will look at Early Years’ practice and discuss ways to ameliorate the effects of the ‘double bind’. This is the notion that to learn a new language, you must be socially accepted by those who speak the language; but to be socially accepted, you must be able to speak the language. Often, we see much younger learners in solitary play or undergoing a silent period. How can we, as practitioners, support these pupils and their families to navigate the expectations and challenges within the UK’s EYFS?
We will have presentations from Karen Warwick who is a trainer at the Bell Foundation and has been involved in creating a framework to support language learning in the EYFS. Additionally, we will hear from colleagues whose practice has been noted as outstanding by OFSTED.
Please join us for what should be a thought provoking session with practical advice for EYFS practitioners.
