There are many positive aspects to immersing EAL learners in mainstream lessons. They are a rich environment in which learners will be constantly exposed to the academic vocabulary they need to develop. It is also where they interact with their peers, forming important bonds and developing social skills.
However, immersion doesn’t come without its challenges. School staff may require training to be able to answer the demands of language learners, such as understanding what the challenges for learners from varied backgrounds are and creating strategies to differentiate instruction and materials. Time to learn, train, and prepare lessons and resources comes on top of an already long list of tasks for staff.
How can FlashAcademy help?
Our job at FlashAcademy® is to help reduce the load on school staff and accelerate language learning for EAL pupils. We provide lessons which include interactive flashcards, activities and games, divided into categories targeting key curriculum vocabulary and vocabulary related to everyday life and functional skills.
Here are some ways schools use FlashAcademy®
- In-class support
Schools have devices on hand in the classroom, so pupils who are struggling to keep up with demanding lessons have a tool to always be productive. We recommend distributing earphones so pupils may work through subject-related vocabulary whilst the other learners are working on something else. - One-to-one and group interventions
Pupils have an allocated time each week to work through FlashAcademy® content alongside peers or individually, accompanied by a member of staff who oversees and assists the session. It enables personalised interaction with students, allowing staff to assess the student’s level and closely follow their progress. - FlashAcademy® lessons
Many of our schools have an hour a week devoted to FlashAcademy® to consolidate their learning. They incorporate our free resources into their lessons and allow pupils time to work through specific content at their own pace. These lessons may be concluded with FlashAcademy® word games as a reward. They also use our Live Leaderboard to motivate students to complete lessons and build healthy competition in the classroom. - Extra-curricular practice
Students get extra practice with FlashAcademy® during lunch breaks or school clubs. It offers pupils a safe and quiet space to learn as well as a place to socialise with peers. - Home usage
Many schools encourage students to access the platform at home from a PC, iPad or Android device. This allows parents to get involved in the pupils’ language journey. - Assessment
Schools use our Primary and Secondary assessments to measure pupils’ abilities and monitor progress across the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking. It can be completed in one sitting or bit by bit, so that pupils can go at their own pace.
