Theme: Why Oracy Education works for Multilingual Learners
As numbers of multilingual learners with EAL continue to rise, and oracy makes a welcome reappearance in policy, Prof Naomi Flynn from University of Reading shares her practical research findings which demonstrate how oracy works for English language learners. Naomi has worked with practitioners in linguistically diverse schools in the US and the UK, to explore how practice that is intentionally dialogic and culturally sustaining can boost multilingual learners’ academic outcomes and their sense of school belonging. Drawing on several of her projects with Talk-Rich Teaching she will explain why oracy education benefits multilingual learners and all learners, and what teachers have done when pursuing a more talk-rich approach in the classroom.
