Description
This edition of NALDIC Quarterly includes a focus on community languages. Leena Robertson contributes a vignette of one child’s experience of different language learning contexts, Ranna Jahanshahi and Parminder Johal write about Iranian and Panjabi complementary schools in London and Leicester, Punam Saini describes the aims of the Community Languages Network, and we include information about a major survey of community languages provision being conducted by CILT. Colleagues who have sought guidance of ICT for community languages will find Steve Cushion’s information about keyboard layouts and software enlightening. His article illustrates that ICT for community languages is not just a technical matter; it relates to human rights and to the value placed on all languages. Also related to ICT and language learning is the information provided by Grethe Heen about a European project. In addition we present a TESOL position statement on Multilingualism, an ‘essential weblist for community languages’, and included in the ‘reviews’ section is a significant new book on multilingual classrooms. The importance of national and community languages is also reflected in Dina Mehmedbegovic’s account of an international symposium she attended in New York on ‘Imagining Multilingual Schools’.
