Description
We are pleased to include two articles based on presentations at NALDIC’s 16th Annual Conference ‘EAL; more than just good practice’. The first is a transcript of Beverly Derewianka’s seminar which explores the challenges of scaffolding the use of interpersonal language in writing response texts in English through an examination of different responses on the web to a media text. The second is an article based on Catherine Wallace’s seminar in which she argues for the importance of providing opportunities for students to engage with ‘whole texts’ as opposed to fragments and the development of close textual analysis and critical literacy as key contributors in empowerment – as readers and citizens.
